Sutamarchán’s Great Tomatina: A Celebration of Tradition and Agriculture

The Great Tomatina of Sutamarchán once again turned the streets of this picturesque Colombian town into a sea of red, bringing together thousands of participants in a festival that honors the local tomato-based economy.
Inspired by Spain’s La Tomatina, this Colombian version has become a major cultural event, attracting visitors from across the country and abroad.
This year’s 15th edition saw around 20,000 people take part in the three-day celebration, where tomatoes flew through the air in a joyful battle.Sutamarchán’s economy is deeply tied to tomato farming, with 70–80% of families relying on the industry. The festival not only boosts tourism but also promotes the region’s agricultural heritage.
Mayor Miguel Andrés Rodríguez emphasized, “This festival is more than just a tomato battle—it’s a tribute to our local farmers.”
